Alibaba enters traditional retail sector

Following in the footsteps of Amazon with its acquisition of Whole Foods, Alibaba  is now entering the traditional retail sector with the construction of a megastore that will be called More Mall. Through this new project the Chinese giant intends not only to challenge its US rival but to usher in a new retail era.

This five-floor 40,000-square-metre megastore will be built alongside the company’s headquarters in Hangzhou and will also house a Hema Supermarket, Alibaba’s grocery store. More Mall is scheduled to open in around April 2018 and will sell the brands present on Taobao, Alibaba’s ecommerce platform, as well as hosting the brand stores of other Chinese and international groups.
