Ab-Inbev invests in Corona Extra brand

Mexican beer maker Grupo Modelo, owned by international beverage giant AB-InBev since 2013, plans to invest more than US $755 million in a new brewery in the Mexican state of Hidalgo.

The plant will be the group’s eighth brewery in Mexico and will create 6,200 direct and indirect jobs.

Operations are due to begin in 2019 with an initial annual capacity of 12 million hectolitres of Corona and Victoria brand beer, although this may be increased in the medium term to 24 million hectolitres.

It will be the second largest brewery in the world in terms of output volumes after the Zacatecas plant, also owned by the group.

The brewery, called Cervecería Modelo del Centro, will meet the sharp increase in demand for Corona Extra brand beer (produced entirely in Mexico), which saw 14% growth in global sales in 2016.
