Amazon sees growth in food segment turnover in the United States, UK and Germany
Amazon’s online sales in the food segment are continuing to grow in its three largest markets.
Following last summer’s acquisition of Whole Foods, the American e-commerce giant posted 2017 revenues of US $2 billion in the United States (59% up on 2016). The biggest contributions were made by fresh drinks with revenues of $350 million (+65%), coffee ($365 million; + 34%), snacks, breakfast foods and chewing gum (revenues respectively of $150 million, $150 million and $125 million; +53%, +38% and +35%).
Amazon Fresh has also performed strongly, doubling its weekly turnover in the space of 12 months. The biggest selling products were dairy ($85 million of revenue generated in 2017 in the United States), meat ($50 million), frozen food ($45 million), and fruit and vegetables ($40 million each).
Amazon also saw outstanding performances in Germany and the UK with sales respectively of $245 million and $209 million (54% and 56% up on the previous year). The driving segments were beer, wine and spirits.
