Amazon acquires the top player in the US organic food market
Amazon has announced a deal to acquire Whole Foods Market, the best-known organic and health food brand in the United States, for a cash price of US $13.7 billion (€12.3 billion at current exchange rates).
Following losses extending over several quarters, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos plans to turn Whole Foods Market’s fortunes around by exploiting home deliveries and a non-traditional distribution model.
Also present in Canada and the UK, Whole Foods Market has approximately 30,000 certified organic and 13,500 non-GMO certified products and annual revenues of around $15 billion. The deal marks Amazon’s largest ever acquisition and will be concluded in the second half of the year.
