Comital, a new Italo-Cuban joint venture for fresh pasta production
Comital is the name of a new joint venture between the Emilia-Romagna, Italy-based firm Tecal.Pro specialising in the production of food mixtures, natural aromas, herbs and spices for food production processes, and the Cuban company Coral Sa.
Valued at around US $3.3 million, the investment will involve the construction of a factory for Italian fresh filled pasta (ravioli, lasagne and cannelloni) in Cuba, a country where 80% of food consumption is currently met by imports.
Construction of the new factory will begin in September 2018 in the municipality of La Habana del Este. It will have an automated line and will adopt production and distribution methods that comply with European standards.
The first products are expected to be launched onto the market in late 2019. Tecal.Pro has been operating in Cuba for more than 20 years and also supplies technological solutions for packaging. A total of ten food sector companies with direct foreign investment currently operate in Cuba and another three are at the start-up stage.
According to data published by the official media, a further 32 new investment projects worth a total of $760 million are in the pipeline, mostly in the food industry.
