Sainsbury’s ready to launch Crunchy Roasted Crickets

The British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced that it is set to launch a line of edible insect-based products, a market that is expected to expand to over $500 million in less than 15 years.

Specifically, Sainsbury’s will be selling its European-produced Smoky BBQ Crunchy Roasted Crickets in packets of 50 at the price of £1.50.

Consumers appear to be increasingly willing to explore this new sustainable source of protein. One gramme of dehydrated crickets contains more protein than beef, chicken and pork (68 g of protein per 100 g compared to the 31 g contained in beef).

Insect protein also brings enormous benefits in terms of lower greenhouse gas emissions due to the need for 12 times less feed on average than conventional livestock production.
